Racecar Crashers (by Trajectile Interactive) -- (soon to be) published PlayStation 5 game (proprietary game engine)

Pre-word

Racecar Crashers started out as our final year (Level 7) university group assignment. 4 of us programmers (no artists or designers [shocking, I know]) sat down and started brainstorming what game to make in 12 weeks.

While discussing ideas for our game we observed a common theme emerge regarding some of the most cherished gaming moments of our childhoods. Further discussing this with other people it was revealed that a lot of people think back fondly to playing casual or competitive games with their friends.

However, throughout development, it grew to be so much more. The game is currently accepted to be published by Steel Minions around the end of Q3 2025 on the PlayStation 5 store. We also established an online presence for our *totally real* game development studio: Trajectile Interactive:

Industry events

We applied, were invited to, or were nominated to attend a series of high-profile industry events to showcase our game. We were also nominated for a range of different awards at some of these events (TBD).

In addition, our game was also put forward by the university for the Best Student Game award by TIGA. Finally, we were recently interviewed by the BBC, where we talked about our game development journey.

Some technical jargon

The game runs on our own PS5 game engine that we made from scratch. It uses the PS5 SKD (similar to DirectX 12 and Vulkan), written in C++.

Personal contribution

Below I listed my specialities and areas in which I was the “expert”, so to speak. This is not all the items I worked on/created, just the major ones which took considerable time (chronological order):

  • Car control & physics

  • Vertex colours

  • Intercontinental Homing Ballistic Missile Item

  • Crash City (the only track we have so far)

  • Animated/responsive water & cars falling in

  • Car customisation and custom parameters
